The best fireworks display I ever saw was in 1976.
I know what you're thinking-- USA bicentennial. You're wrong. It was sometime in mid-November. I was in Red Square, and yes I mean the one in Moscow, in what was then the Soviet Union at its repressive best.
It was some sort of holiday, though I can't for the life of me figure out what it was. Maybe a national leader's birthday? Maybe GUM had just gotten in a new shipment of shoes? I haven't the foggiest, and may never know.
Whatever it was, we went to Red Square for the changing of the guard at the Kremlin, and there was a spectacular fireworks display. It was unlike anything I had ever seen-- they somehow managed to blanket the entire sky in a uniform red glow. And then a green one. A blue one. Red again, and purple. Everywhere you looked, the sky was a magical color. Even though I was just a couple of days shy of my twelfth birthday, I clearly remember facing St. Basil's Cathedral and watching the sky transform itself.
