So we've all driven over the bay bridge dozens or hundreds of times, right? And most of us have probably spotted some sort of bridge worker climbing up the giant support cables on the sides of the bridge. It looks both scary and fascinating, doesn't it?
I recently spotted something new on the side of the bridge-- gates near the lowest points of the cables. What the... ? Are there enough people climbing around on the bay bridge that they feel the need for a lock? The photo above is a bad phonecam picture, but the gate is the thing sticking up near the center of the photo, above the road sign.
And while I'm at it, one from the archives: the guy I photographed in 2003, climbing a ladder on the side of the bay bridge.
I went home, grabbed the camera, threw it on the back of the bike, and went down to Middle Harbor Park on a shooting expedition.
Mostly I got cranes loading container ships, but I arrived about 15 minutes before sunset, and stuck around long enough to see the sun go down. It was basically a quiet, unremarkable sunset with few clouds in the sky, but just as the sun sank behind the Marin headlands the sky turned an amazingly intense gold. I snagged this shot with the bay bridge in the foreground and the Golden Gate bridge tucked in behind it at the precise second that the sun dipped completely behind the hills.
Other than a bit of raw tweaking and a tiny amount of sharpening, it's exactly what the camera captured.
